Simon Hoffman

23 year old Simon Hoffman, of the Guards House Regiment.
Killed in Afghanistan, on Friday 8th January 2010, by an IED.

On saturday, a memorial was held at Main Operations Base Price, where second in command of the Danish Battle Group; Oberstløjtnant Michael Engholm spoke of loss and the thoughts loss provokes. He urged the assembled soldiers to consider loss and what it means and send home their thoughts.

"To Simon's group, to the Company and the Squadron, whom on this day also have suffered wounded, lets us continue to keep sending our thoughts home to Denmark. To Simon's mother, his sister and his girl friend. Let us wish our fellow soldiers, the units on the ground and Simon's family, the strength to meet the challenges and tasks that lie ahead".

There has been an increase in casualties from Afghanistan in recent days and weeks and today HOK reports this is due to a large offensive which Danish troops have participated in. I hope they all come through the mission safely, though I know there will almost certainly be more losses, both for Danish troops and for our allies. I wish there were a better way to resolve the problem but if this is the only way forwards, then I hope for victory, for Afghanistan and for us all. This is the price for our freedom and we have a burden of responsibility because of that. If we ignore the sacrifices of so many then who are we, and what do we stand for?

They're mixing it up, while I'm safe and sound.

Good on them, and not so good on me.
