The Pheonix Exultant

By John C. Wright.

The second book in the 'Golden Age' series. This carries on the adventures of Phaethon in the strange and wonderful world of the Golden Oecumene (I mentioned the first book here). Like the first one, this book is populated with strange and abstract creatures so far removed from our modern reality as to appear utterly outlandish, and yet still within the acceptable preconceptions of science fiction. So far the story is holding up, but I do get a sense that this book could have been cut out altogether, that it was included to flesh out the story and justify a trilogy.

Here is another more comprehensive review of the book.

State of Fear.

By Michael Crichton.

This is a novel about an LA lawyer who gets involved in a struggle to prevent eco-terrorists from staging several attacks designed to create fake environmental disasters in order to promote . As thrillers go, its a bit on the tame side and its obvious that this is a book with an agenda. Crichton throws in a lot of RL references to demonstrate that the current global warming is most probably not due to humanity at all but some other, natural phenonema.

The story is fairly predictable and the ending a bit dull. Its okay if you like Crichton's style or if you want to challenge your idea's regarding global warming (the latter being why I picked this up at all)
