Notice

My computer died on me. I don't know why but it looks like some files in Windows crapped out. It may be a while before I can update my blog. I'm writing this on Mette's laptop.

Yup. It was acting weird all day and this is not the first time I've found my computer going down on a friday either... I wonder...

It is the nisse. Sucks anyway, you seem to have perpetual computer problems.
I am drunk, sleep well my friend.

My health problems are perpetual. My computer problems are more like sporadic. Its been eight months or more since the last serious problem.... well, unless you count getting disconnected for not paying a bill...

In a way its annoying, but its also some what liberating since it allows me to get more done. Since I started playing EVE, I've become very unproductive.

Er, that's both your household computers. Both new. I find this suspicious.

Just scanned all 3 of ours, and everything is fine (even the XP 0 machine that was playing up before... the one the children use)

Do you have a firewall or router?
- We do, and it picks up something really dodgy about every day (like a port scan from an IP address in Russia).
- Occasionally, the firewall picks up something unknown, trying to get Internet access. I check this at once (it is usually OK, very rarely some sort of adware - did I mention Ad Aware?).

Do you get open mysterious emails?
- If at all possible, never (or forward it to my wife's email account, which has better / different AV / spam filters).

Do you use Internet Exploder, with various things enabled that shouldn't be, to visit dodgy sites?
- I avoid IE (too many exploits are aimed at IE).
- I disable as many features as possible (and enable them for specific sites). This annoys the children.
- I'm fairy selective about dodgy sites, and screen anything remotely suspect (everything I've brought with me on a memory stick, down to VLC media player, has been quarantined for 24 hours, then scanned online... call me paranoid).

Is your AV up to date (or do you screen things with any of the online checks?
- Our AV is not up to date, and therefore useless, but I scan everything using various online services.

Oleg.

I don't know that its a virus. Peter came up from down stairs and had a look at it and he reckons something may have 'burned out'.

Starting up the computer I get this:

Windows kunne ikke starte, fordi denne fil er beskadiget eller mangler:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

Du kan forsøg at reparere denne fil ved at starte Windows Installation ved hjælp af installationsprogrammets cd-rom. Væl 'r' i det første skærmbillede for at reparere.

Suffice to say my attempts at using the Installation Cd did not yield any results. Peter looked in the DOS and reckons everything else is still intact so it may be possible to recover all the data (images of Freja etc) and then reinstall Windows XP.

In the mean time I am building models. I can post here but I can't read e-mails, and no I never open anything suspicious and yes I know about Ad aware.

I was playing EVE. I went out to make a brew and 2 minutes later when I came back, I had a black screen showing the above message.

Ouch!

Is it still under guarantee?
If not, do you have / want to borrow a spare hdd to bump start it?

Its still under guarantee. Peter (downstairs) is going to help me retrieve all the data.

Incidently, I've been using Mette's lap top these last three days or so and I've not experienced any problem with it.
