Software question
So... Mette and I have been pondering the creation of an actual web site to cater for all our various interests and idea's... Now, bear in my mind I am as thick as two short planks with regards to computers... who can tell me whats the best, easiest, cheapest web site building software?

NVU is free, and it's pretty user friendly. I used it to put together the site for the company that I work for, and I'm rather impaired when it comes to coding...

I have had problems with it crashing on occasion, so if you use it, be sure to save often.

Do you want to use some sort of template, or write a bunch of html sides? Do you want a simple sort of website, or lots of features (such as the ability to leave comments)?
I'll work on the assumption that you want something fairly simple, maybe with Jan doing some impressive layout.
Anyway, I'd go for Dreamweaver, and take a look at (such sites as):

I'd suggest that you learn what html tags do.
Javascript is easy enough, but I'd suggest that you don't bother learning how to write your own.

What do you want to do?
Do you want to make your own site, page by page? This is fairly easy, and I'm sure that you can make some really nice layout.
Or do you want to modify some sort of template, which is how this blog works?
How much in the way of comments, password access, search function, etc., do you want?
Anyway, my advice is to play with various html editors. I favour Dreamweaver, but I seem to remember that it is fairly expensive. Maybe you should look at an earlier version.
If you can learn to use something like Word, you can learn to use Dreamweaver.
Learn how html tags work. This is trivial.
Take a look at such sites as:

Although Javascript is also pretty easy, I'd advise you not to bother until (or if) you actually need it.
I have no experience with using templates.
Examine sites you like, and think about why you like them.
Conversely learn what to avoid.

Hmmmmm...... that's a tricky question. It really depends on what type of content you want to provide. Blogs are great, but they have their limitations. With my work with the Tewksbury SpedPAC, I tried to use freely available tools to handle the site. Over a year later and I'm still not happy with the results, so I'm building my own system.
If you're comfortable with HTML, and all the other stuff like Javascript, then all you need is a text editor and an FTP app to upload the code files up to the server. If you're not, then a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor, like M$ FrontPage, may be the way to go.
WordPress, another blog software suite, supports the management of web page apart from blog posts, that is how I manage my effluency site, and it supposedly supports plug-ins so that you can enable such features as photo galleries and the like, but I'm less than happy with the internals of the system. I haven't upgraded to version 2.0+ yet, so my misgivings may be misplaced.

That's a rather tall order... a web-site can be anything from static web-pages, blogs, message-boards, photo-albums to dedicated web-applications... so with some more information it might be possible to answer your question, also it would be good to know if you're planning on hosting the web-pages yourself or have it done at a hosting company. Thanks every one. There was some sort of settings glitch I think since I couldn't see any of these acomments until today when I was tinkering with the new beta fatures and came across a mass of unread comments in the comments moderation feature.
Its this sort of confusion that I have to take into account if we're going to start our own site. What ever I use would have to be 'fool proof'.
